Day
1 USA-ANTIGUA
Depart
USA to Guatemala City. Upon your arrival you will be met assisted
& transferred to your hotel in Antigua. Antigua was the third capital
city of the country founded by the Spaniards in 1541. The city was
destroyed by a series of earthquakes in 1773 & the capital was moved
to where Guatemala City is today. Still contains some of the region’s
finest examples of 16th, 17th & 18th century Spanish colonial architecture
most of which has been restored and it is an UNESCO “World Heritage”
site. The remainder of the day is at leisure.
Day
2 ANTIGUA
A
morning tour visits the Capucinas Convent, the central plaza, the
Cathedral, San Carlos University (today a museum), Ciudad Vieja
and more. The remainder of the day is free. Perhaps stroll in the
streets of the city with its numerous stores, charming cafes & restaurants.

3 ANTIGUA-CHICHICASTENANGO-PANAJACHEL |
|
Today
you will drive through the country’s highlands along the Pan-American
Highway to Lake Atitlan. Considered by many as one of the most beautiful
lakes of the world it is located in an altitude of 1580 meters &
covers an area of 90 square miles, surrounded by three enchanting
volcanoes & by 12 Indian towns. You will proceed to the town of
Chichicastenango located between two towering volcanoes to visit
the impressive open-air market where natives gather to barter their
handicrafts & agricultural products. Then you will visit the church
of Santo Tomas built on the remains of a Mayan Temple. Continue
to the town of Panajachel in the shores of the Lake for overnight.

4 PANAJACHEL-SANTIAGO ATITLAN-ANTIGUA
In the morning you will cross the Lake Atitlan by boat to the
picturesque town of Santiago Atitlan, home of the Tuztuil Indians who maintain
their Maya religious practices & are renowned artisans. Visit the
town & the local markets & continue to Guatemala City for overnight.

5 GUATEMALA CITY-FLORES (TIKAL)
You
will be transferred to the airport this morning for your short flight
to Flores. Upon your arrival you will be met & start the tour of
Tikal, the great Mayan city, located in a tropical forest. Contains
Mayan ruins among the most impressive in the world with over 3000
structures. Constructed in the period of 200 BC to 900 AD was rediscovered
in the beginning of the 20th century & it is an UNESCO “Humanity
Heritage” site. Visit the main plaza surrounded by the famous Grand
Jaguar Temple, the Temple of the Masks, Altars, Palaces & more.
Proceed to the museum to admire the Mayan findings of pottery &
jade jewels. Transfer to your hotel for overnight. B

6 FLORES-ITZA LAKE-GUATEMALA CITY |

This
morning you will take a boat ride to Lake Peten Itza to visit Petencito,
a tourist center where you can admire Peten’s fauna at a small zoo.
From there you will continue to “El Mirador del Rey Canek” a look
out point where King Canek the principal of the Itzae tribe had
his settlement. Continue to Actun-Kan caves near Flores. In the
afternoon you will be transferred to the airport for your flight
to Guatemala City. Meet & transfer to your hotel in Guatemala City.

7 GUATEMALA CITY
Guatemala
de Asuncion, the official name of
Guatemala City is a metropolis
of over 3 million inhabitants. A mixture of neoclassical & modern
architecture was founded after the earthquakes of 1773 which destroyed
the original capital city set 30 miles away, today called Antigua.
A morning tour of the city takes you to the Minerva Park to see
the giant relief map of Guatemala, then to the central Plaza to
visit the national Palace, the Cathedral & the central market with
a huge variety of handicrafts. Proceed to the civic center to visit
the “Miguel Angel Asturias” cultural center & continue to the southern
end of the city along Avenida de Las Americas to observe modern
residential areas. The afternoon is free for your own activities.
