Itinerary

Day 1 USA-RIO DE JANEIRO

Depart USA via overnight flight to Rio de Janeiro with meals on board.

Day 2 RIO DE JANEIRO
Meeting and assistance upon arrival and transferred to your hotel. Rio, woven between 20 miles of white sand beaches trimmed by green rolling peaks, is a sophisticated center of culture, music and dance. Its legendary nightlife and breathtaking beauty has made it one of the world’s most attractive cities. Remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 3 RIO DE JANEIRO (CORCOVADO)
Rio was the capital city of Brazil for 125 years and still remains the cultural capital of the country. After breakfast, a drive through the city takes you to the Cosme Velho train station. The cog-wheeled train will climb up through the Tijuca Rain Forest to Corcovado Mountain about 2200 feet above sea level and to the steps of the 125-foot statue of Christ the Redeemer, Rio’s signature landmark. You will enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro, the Guanabara Bay, Rio & Niteroy 9-mile Bridge, Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. The afternoon is free to explore the city on your own. (B)
Day 4 RIO DE JANEIRO (SUGAR LOAF)
Today you will drive along Rio’s famous beaches passing through traditional and historical sites to the Praia Vermelha cable car station. The cable car first will take you to the Urca Mountain (mid-way station) with its gardens and look out points. Then, the second part of the ride will take you to the peak of the Sugar Loaf Mountain the guardian of Guanabara Bay, 1300 ft. above sea level. Return to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure. (B)

Day 5 RIO DE JANEIRO-BELO HORIZONTE

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Belo Horizonte. Located 288 miles from Rio de Janeiro, it is the capital city of the state of Minas Gerais. The third largest city of Brazil, it is a bustling yet easy going city with hospitable inhabitants. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. (B)

Day 6 BELO HORIZONTE (SABARA)
Morning tour of the city includes Liberty square, Boa Viagen Cathedral, Palace of Fine Arts, the Historical Museum and Pampulha District with its artificial lake, the Modern Art Museum and Church of Sao Francisco with its paintings and mosaics by Portinari and design by Niemeyer, the primary architect of Brasilia. In the afternoon you will visit the historical site of Sabara, 10 miles from Belo Horizonte, founded in 1672 on the Banks of Rio das Velhas. Visit includes the Imperial Theater, which has been restored, the Gold Museum, the church of Carmo and the house of Brazil’s great sculptor Alejandrino (the little cripple). Contrasting with the historical monuments, Sabara is the site of a steel mill and industry that replaced exhausted gold mines. Return to the hotel. (B)

Day 7 BELO HORIZONTE (OURO PRETO)
Today you will depart for a full day tour to the historic town of Ouro Preto. Originally named Vila Rica (rich town) this engaging 18th century town (national monument) was once the wealthiest gold mining center of Brazil. Ouro Preto is the most important historical center of the country and its baroque style has been preserved since the 1700’s. It is considered one of the two best preserved colonial towns of the nation. Its cobblestone streets, churches, bridges, palaces and museums are evidence of its past wealth and glory. Visits will be made to the Museum of Inconfidence, Church of San Francisco de Assisi, Museum of the school of Mines, formerly the Governor’s Palace, Church of Pillar and the Casa dos Contos. Lunch is included. In the evening return to Bello Horizonte. (B, L)


Day 8 BELO HORIZONTE-SALVADOR DA BAHIA

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Salvador.
 Meeting and assistance upon arrival and transferral to your hotel. Salvador, founded in 1549, was the first colonial capital of the country until 1763 and the first point discovered by the Portuguese. The cultivation of sugar cane and cocoa made it on of the wealthiest areas, slaves from Africa were the workforces and their influence can be seen in the visual arts and the music. Bahia is the artistic soul of Brazil; its music, dance, art, literature and faith have been influenced by Bahia. Balance of the day is at leisure. (B)

Day 9 Sat SALVADOR DA BAHIA
This striking city lies on beautiful Santos Bay & is divided into an upper and lower section. The enormous Lacerda elevator, which goes from one level to the other, affords outstanding views of
 multicolored homes, red-tiled roofs, Terreiros (voodoo worship houses), twisting narrow cobblestone streets, about three hundred churches and the Santos Bay. Today’s morning tour visits some of the city’s landmarks. Porto de Bara (historical point of the foundation of the city), Ladeira de Bara, N.S de Vitoria church, Costa Pinto Museum, Dois de Julho Square, Castro Alves Theater, San Pedro Church, Castro Alves Square (heart of Bahia’s carnival). Proceed to Terreiro de Jesus Square with six churches including the Church of San Francisco; Largo do Pelourinho, Carmo Museum and more. The afternoon is free to explore the city on your own. (B)




Day 10 SALVADOR DA BAHIA (TODOS OS SANTOS BAY)
You will be transferred to the harbor this morning to board a schooner for a cruise to the “Todos os Santos” All Saints Bay. You will experience an unforgettable view of Salvador, the old part of the city, docks and Bonfim church as you sail the bay. Proceed to “Frades” Monk Island where a stop will be made (swimming and sunbathing available) and continue to Itaparica Island to visit the Sao Lourenco Fortress & Fonte De Bica (mineral water fountain). Return to Salvador. (B, L)
Day 11 SALVADOR-RECIFE
Today you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Recife. Having its name derived from the reefs which protect its shore, Recife founded in 1709 is Brazil’s fourth largest city and is known as the “Brazilian Venice” because of its many canals and waterways. You will be met, assisted and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure. (B)

Day 12 RECIFE (CITY TOUR-OLINDA)
This coastal city on the golden coast of Brazil presents a contrast of colonial and modern architecture. The three main regions of the city are spread out over islands and peninsulas, connected by bridges and are surrounded by beaches of calm water and gentle surf. Morning tour of Recife takes you to the downtown section to visit the Republican Square, the Golden Chapel, the Fort Brum & the House of Culture. A short ride from Recife, Olinda has the best-preserved colonial buildings in Brazil and has been declared by UNESCO as a “monument to humanity”. The city’s architecture reflects both its Portuguese and Dutch heritage. Visit the Misericordia Church, Benedectine Convemt & the old Slave Market. The afternoon is free for your own activities. (B)

Day 13 RECIFE
The day is at leisure to explore on your own, shop in the local markets or take optional tours to nearby beaches & islands. (B)
Day 14 RECIFE-USA
Transfer to the airport for your flight home (via Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro). (B)
